Assistance for Businesses & Organizations

Local Assistance
In terms of financial assistance, insurance coverage and loan assistance are going to be the primary recovery resources your business or organization will rely on in the event your business experiences some kind of disaster. While some additional financial resources are available, there are also resource providers that can assist you with other business needs.

In Nebraska, there are many local business organizations and resource providers that provide assistance, training, loans and resources to small businesses on an ongoing basis. If your business experiences a personal hardship, you should contact these organizations to learn more about their programs.

The NebraskaEDGE website lists several of these great organizations, http://nebraskaedge.unl.edu/research.shtml, as well as the NxBizSuccess Resource Center website, http://www.nxbizsuccess.com/resource-center.

Two programs that currently offer some form of assistance to businesses specific to recent local natural disasters are the Nebraska Business Development Center and the South Central Economic Development District.

Federal Assistance
Even for larger natural disasters in Nebraska, federal disaster assistance programs are typically not available for individuals or businesses due to the extent of damage as well as federal requirements. If a federal disaster declaration is awarded with individual assistance in your county, your business might be eligible for a number of federal programs.

A federal disaster declaration and an approved request for individual assistance are required for federal assistance to be authorized for businesses and private non-profit organizations.
  • DisasterAssistance.gov is a one-stop shop for identifying eligibility for federal disaster assistance. The site provides information on how you might be able to get help from the U.S. Government before, during and after a disaster.
  • The U.S. Small Business Administration is the primary source of financial assistance after a disaster and provides low-interest loans to businesses of all sizes and private non-profit organizations. To learn more about SBA loan programs view the SBA FACT SHEET.
  • The USDA Rural Development's business programs normally do not have disaster assistance authority. However, one of their programs can help provide financial relief directly to small businesses as a result of natural disasters. To learn more about USDA RD loan programs view the USDA RD FACT SHEET
Additional Assistance
Many disasters do not qualify for authorized federal assistance so it is important for your business or non-profit to work now to be prepared to bounce back after an incident. Other types of disaster assistance may be offered in your community or within your industry but the amounts are usually small and you may face competition outside your region.
  • The National Disaster Recovery Program Database is a database of a range of federal and private sector recovery programs that may be available after a disaster. To search for possible funding opportunities select Businesses/For-Profit Entities as the Eligible Recipient and Nebraska as the Eligible State. The database was released in March 2011 and hopefully more programs will continue to be added to the available listings.
  • The Craft Artist Emergency Relief Fund + Artists' Emergency Resources offers several types of emergency relief and recovery for craft artists. Please visit their website to see if your business is eligible. CERF+ also provides an extensive Arts Sector Emergency Resource guide for other national organizations providing assistance to the arts community.
This list will be updated as we identify more opportunities for outside funding.
